This season has marked a significant shift for the Springboks as they’ve embraced a player rotation system, leading to some intriguing changes in player roles.
One player at the center of this transition is Handre Pollard, who has frequently been a part of the ‘bomb squad,’ contributing from the bench during crucial moments.
Pollard’s time on the field has recently been as a substitute in four of the Rugby Championship Tests.
Now, he’s set to return to his club, Leicester Tigers, as he embarks on the final year of his contract.
Reports suggest that Pollard, who is earning around £600,000 a year (approximately R13.65 million), might consider a move back to Japan for domestic rugby if he decides to leave Leicester.
This speculation comes as Leicester is rumored to be eyeing Scarlets flyhalf Sam Coselow, a potential successor to Pollard.
Embracing Mentorship
At just 30 years old, Pollard is still in his prime, yet he’s already embracing a mentorship role among the younger players.
“I may not be that old, but it’s enjoyable,” he remarked.
“The younger guys are enthusiastic and eager to learn, which is great. We all had veterans who helped us when we were starting out.”
He highlights the healthy competition within the team, stating, “We all share the same ultimate goal, which is bigger than any one of us.
If we can share our knowledge with the younger guys, that’s fantastic, as we’re learning from them too.”
Pollard emphasizes the importance of growth and staying current, noting that the influx of fresh talent keeps the atmosphere competitive and enjoyable.
Looking Ahead
Regarding the national team’s direction, Pollard expressed excitement about this post-World Cup period as an opportunity to experiment and innovate.
“After the 2019 World Cup, we missed out on building and experimenting in the early years,” he explained.
“Now, we’re trying out new strategies, and you can see it reflected in our gameplay, especially with the likes of Jerry and Tony. Each game presents a new challenge.”
Pollard reiterated the team’s focus on gradual improvement.
“We take it week by week, but there’s a bigger picture in mind. Playing alongside younger talent and seasoned players gives us a great mix.
We’re feeling good about where we are, but we’re always aiming higher. The drive to elevate our game is definitely present.”
What Lies Ahead?
As Pollard and the Springboks navigate this season, fans are eager to see how these changes and strategies will unfold.
The blend of experience and youthful energy has the potential to create exciting outcomes, and all eyes will be on how Pollard and his teammates continue to evolve as they strive for greatness.
