Instead of catching Manchester United’s match against Porto, Sir Alex Ferguson chose to watch Rangers take on Lyon on Thursday night.
It seems the legendary manager is taking a break from the troubles brewing at Old Trafford, where things aren’t looking too bright for the Red Devils.
Ten Hag’s Struggles Continue
Erik ten Hag is feeling the heat as the manager of Manchester United after a rough start to the season.
The team has only managed to secure three wins out of their first nine games, which has put his position in jeopardy.
With hopes of turning their fortunes around in European competition, Ten Hag looked to the game against Porto for a much-needed boost.
However, the match only added to their woes, ending in a 3-3 draw after they needed a last-minute goal from Harry Maguire to avoid a loss.
A Rollercoaster Match Against Porto
The game started poorly for United, as Porto quickly jumped to a 2-0 lead in the first half.
Although the Red Devils managed to fight back, scoring a couple of goals, it was former Chelsea target Samuel Omorodion who turned the tide with his second goal just after halftime, pushing Porto back into the lead.
Meanwhile, Ferguson wasn’t watching the drama unfold in Portugal.
Instead, he was spotted at Ibrox, where he seemed to enjoy watching Rangers, decked out in a blue shirt and tie.
Unfortunately for him and the home crowd, Rangers also faced a tough match, falling behind 4-1 before the hour mark, with Malick Fofana and Alexandre Lacazette each netting a brace, rendering Tom Lawrence’s lone goal insignificant.
A Legacy of Watching from the Stands
At 82 years old, Ferguson’s ties to Rangers run deep; he played for them from 1967 to 1969 and has been a steadfast supporter of United since stepping down in 2013.
Unfortunately, his beloved club has not won the Premier League since his retirement, despite several managers trying and failing to fill his shoes.
Ten Hag has received support from the club’s management on multiple occasions, but the results haven’t improved.
Last week, the team faced a humiliating 3-0 loss to Tottenham and is gearing up to face Aston Villa in the league this weekend.
In the midst of all this, captain Bruno Fernandes received another red card during the chaotic draw with Porto.
Allegri as a Potential Successor?
Adding to the drama, a surprising report from Italy suggests that former Juventus manager Massimiliano Allegri might be considered as a replacement for Ten Hag if things don’t turn around soon.
According to Gazzetta dello Sport, Ferguson himself is in Allegri’s corner, praising his knack for handling complex locker room dynamics.
Currently a free agent after being dismissed from Juventus shortly after winning the Coppa Italia last season, Allegri could be a strong contender to take over if United decides to make a change.
The football world will be watching closely to see how this saga unfolds.
