Kansas City Chiefs Star Chris Jones Shares Insights on the Locker Room’s Unwritten Rules Including the Prohibition of Black Cleats

In a surprising revelation, Chris Jones, the defensive tackle for the Kansas City Chiefs, recently shed light on an unusual rule in the team’s locker room: no black cleats are allowed.

Despite his long tenure with the team, Jones admits he still can’t figure out the reasoning behind this quirky policy.

He discussed this oddity during an appearance on The Rich Eisen Show, leaving fans and fellow players scratching their heads.

Understanding Team Dynamics

When asked by Rich Eisen whether he’s ever had to set a teammate straight, Jones shared insights into how he mentors younger players.

He noted that many newcomers need guidance on the unwritten rules of the organization.

“We have talks,” he said.

“Younger guys are just trying to figure things out, and it’s mostly about showing them the ropes and how things are typically done around here.

It can be something as simple as not wearing black cleats. There are these little things we follow that sometimes players might not know about.”

A Humorous Take on Cleat Rules

Eisen couldn’t resist asking Jones why the ban on black cleats exists.

With a chuckle, Jones replied, “Honestly, I have no clue… I just work here! I’m not the one making the rules.”

This lighthearted moment captured the humor and camaraderie in the locker room, particularly as Jones mentioned a recent incident involving black cleats.

His teammate, Patrick Mahomes, jokingly suggested that black cleats could have cost the Baltimore Ravens a victory against the Chiefs in their season opener.

During the game, Ravens tight end Isaiah Likely had a last-minute touchdown disallowed after video replay revealed his black cleat was out of bounds.

Mahomes quipped, “He’s got to wear white cleats next time. That’s my advice for him.”

Aiming for Greatness

Jones’s journey with the Chiefs has been nothing short of remarkable.

Drafted 37th overall in 2016, he’s been instrumental in the team’s success, contributing to three Super Bowl victories.

The Chiefs secured two of those championships in the last two seasons, and they are now aiming for an unprecedented three-peat in the 2024 season.

When Eisen asked whether the prospect of a three-peat comes up in team discussions, Jones dismissed the idea, emphasizing the challenges ahead.

“No, not at all. It feels so far-fetched,” he explained.

“First, you’ve got to get through the division, and not just the AFC West; there’s the entire AFC to contend with. So much adversity can pop up.”

Focusing on Small Goals

Jones emphasized the importance of setting smaller, achievable goals.

“For us, it’s about winning the AFC West first. If we can do that, we put ourselves in a position for the playoffs.

Then we can think about the AFC, and eventually, the AFC Championship.

If we win that, we can start thinking about the three-peat.

But for now, it’s a long way off, so we need to focus on the smaller goals.

If we hit those, we’ll end up where we want to be.”

As the season progresses, fans are sure to be watching closely to see how the Chiefs navigate their path to success.
