Ex-Orlando Pirates Midfielder Thabo Mngomeni Confident That Mamelodi Sundowns Will Secure Their Eighth Consecutive Betway Premiership Title Despite Early Season Hiccups

When it comes to predicting the winner of the 2024/25 Betway Premiership season, former Orlando Pirates midfielder Thabo Mngomeni remains steadfast in his belief that Mamelodi Sundowns are still the team to beat.

Despite the recent turbulence Sundowns have faced, Mngomeni is confident that their strength and experience will see them through to another title.

Early Struggles for Sundowns

Sundowns have faced some early challenges this season, including back-to-back defeats to Stellenbosch FC in the MTN8.

The departure of Rulani Mokwena has also stirred the pot, leading many to speculate about a potentially more competitive title race this year.

However, Mngomeni isn’t swayed by these early hiccups.

Sundowns: Depth and Consistency

According to Mngomeni, Sundowns’ depth and consistency make them the favorites to clinch their eighth consecutive title.

He noted, “So far, they are the only consistent team in South Africa.

They are too balanced, and they have depth.

Every time they make a substitution, they replace a player with another one who’s got the same qualities.”

The Edge Over Competitors

Mngomeni believes that while other teams might start strong, they could falter due to injuries or lack of depth.

“The other teams might start well, but as games go on, injuries to their best players might let them down.

That’s not the case with Sundowns, as their squad is well-balanced.

That’s what gives Sundowns the edge,” he explained.

Financial Power and Squad Balance

He also emphasized that success isn’t just about having a hefty budget but how effectively it’s utilized.

“It’s not about who has a lot of money, it’s about how to use it.

You need to have a balanced squad to win the championship.

What you have on the bench must match what you have on the pitch, and at the moment, it’s only Sundowns who have that privilege,” Mngomeni said.

Waiting for the Kick-Off

Both Mamelodi Sundowns and Orlando Pirates are still waiting to start their league campaigns due to their CAF commitments.

It remains to be seen how the rest of the season will unfold, but for now, Mngomeni’s confidence in Sundowns’ continued dominance is clear.
