Ben Cohen is currently navigating a challenging period in his personal and professional life, as he fights to keep his relationship and home intact.
This struggle came into the spotlight recently when Cohen appeared in court with his partner, Kristina Rihanoff, who faced legal issues after driving without insurance.
Court Appearance and Emotional Testimony
The Rugby World Cup winner, 45, and the 46-year-old professional dancer, Rihanoff, were both present in court after she was caught driving her £30,000 Audi Q3 in Northampton on April 4 without proper insurance.
Despite receiving six points on her license, Rihanoff was facing a potential ban due to accumulating 12 penalty points.
She contested the conviction, with Cohen providing testimony on her behalf.
During the appeal hearing, Cohen revealed that he had missed a crucial text message from his insurance provider, which contributed to the situation.
Rihanoff was visibly distressed throughout the proceedings, often in tears.
Their relationship, which began on the 11th series of Strictly Come Dancing in 2013, has faced significant stress due to these recent challenges.
Financial Strains and Business Woes
Cohen shared that their financial difficulties have been exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic, which heavily impacted several businesses they had established, including a Yoga studio.
Cohen expressed his daily battle to avoid losing everything, including their home, cars, and relationship.
He admitted to being deeply overdrawn and burdened by business debt.
Rihanoff’s emotional state during the court hearing was evident as she struggled with sickness and had to leave the room.
She explained the necessity of driving for her work judging ballroom competitions and taking her children to school, which added pressure to their situation.
Insurance Policy Issues
The court learned that Cohen had been responsible for arranging insurance for their vehicles.
After receiving a high quote from Aviva, he secured a policy with Dial Direct, paying monthly via direct debit.
However, while abroad in March, Cohen received a message about needing to provide no claims details.
Not having this information, he did not respond, leading to the cancellation of the policy.
When Rihanoff was stopped on April 14, Cohen immediately attempted to secure new insurance but was unaware that the previous policy had been canceled.
He admitted to not informing Rihanoff about the cancellation and not inquiring about her previous speeding offenses before taking out the policy.
Court Ruling and Future Plans
Recorder Louise Cox rejected Rihanoff’s appeal, expressing sympathy but stating that the belief of being insured was not reasonable grounds for her lack of insurance.
Rihanoff was ordered to pay £357 in appeal costs.
As the 22nd series of Strictly Come Dancing kicks off amidst scandals, Cohen and Rihanoff’s personal life remains under scrutiny.
Despite these challenges, Cohen has previously spoken about how their relationship has grown stronger through difficult times, and they plan to celebrate their wedding with their daughters.
Rihanoff’s daughter has already expressed her excitement about the wedding, planning to wear a dress similar to her mother’s.
The couple’s wedding plans reflect their commitment to each other and their family despite the obstacles they face.
