A Tragic Incident in New Jersey
In a quiet New Jersey town, a heartbreaking event has unfolded, leaving the community in shock.
Naomi Elkins, a 27-year-old mother from Lakewood, has been charged with the murder of her two young daughters.
Arrest and Charges
Elkins faces two counts of murder, possession of a weapon, and other related offenses.
Police were called to a home on Shenandoah Drive, an area known for its large Orthodox Jewish community, after reports of two children in cardiac arrest.
The Scene and Investigation
When officers arrived, they found the children, aged one and three, receiving emergency medical care from Hatzolah Medical Services, a Jewish volunteer ambulance group.
Despite the efforts, both children were pronounced dead at the scene.
The investigation revealed that the one-year-old had been stabbed and both children were drowned by Elkins.
Court Appearance
Elkins appeared in court on Wednesday before Judge Scott Basen, who set her next court date for July 1.
Video from the scene showed investigators removing items from the home, which were then loaded into a Sheriff’s Office vehicle.
Elkins was taken into custody without incident and is currently held at the Ocean County Jail.
Community in Shock
The murders have deeply affected the typically serene Orthodox Jewish community, home to the Beth Medrash Govoha, the largest yeshiva outside of Israel.
According to a 2019 report by the Jewish News Syndicate, half of Lakewood’s residents are Orthodox Jews.
