A Turkish student has been detained for using AI software, a camera disguised as a button, and a hidden router to cheat on a university exam. The student was observed behaving suspiciously during the TYT exam on June 8, leading to their detention by police. Subsequently, they were formally arrested and sent to jail pending trial.
Assistance and National Impact
Another individual was also detained for aiding the student during the university aptitude exam, which is a nationwide assessment that determines eligibility for university attendance in Turkey.
Details of the Cheating Mechanism
A video released by police in the southwestern province of Isparta demonstrated how the student employed the cheating system. The setup included a camera disguised as a shirt button connected to AI software via a router hidden in the sole of the student’s shoe.
Police Demonstration of the System
In the video, a police officer scans a question to illustrate the system’s operation. The AI software generates the correct answer, which is then transmitted to the student through an earpiece. The officer explains: “During the TYT, which is the first sitting of the university entrance exam organized in Isparta, a contraption for cheating was discovered in the sole of a suspect’s shoe during a search prompted by their suspicious behavior. The suspect was determined to have cheated during the exam.”
Devices and Methodology
The officer further elaborates: “The items found on the suspect included a router device that provides an internet connection to send the question to AI software. The AI then relays the solution through an earpiece or speaker. Additionally, a mobile phone was found that could transmit spoken sounds to the earpiece, allowing the suspect to hear the conversation. A camera disguised as a button was used to scan the question, which was then sent to the AI via the router, and the AI provided the answer to the suspect.”
