Network Rail Executive Resigns Following Elizabeth Line Chaos
Amid a tumultuous incident leaving thousands stranded, Network Rail’s managing director for the Wales and Western region, Michelle Handforth, has stepped down.
Her resignation comes in the wake of the disruptive chaos on the Elizabeth Line, where passengers, including personalities like James Blunt and Rachel Riley, were left stranded for hours in cold and dark conditions.
Resignation Amid Passenger Ordeal
Michelle Handforth, who held a position overseeing Paddington, decided to resign from her £330,000 salary role, effective Friday. She had joined the company in August 2020 and will continue working on specific projects until her successor is appointed.
Chaos on Elizabeth Line
The disturbing incident unfolded on December 7, leaving some passengers stuck for up to three hours without access to essential facilities or information from operators.
Reports emerged of passengers growing ‘agitated,’ resorting to actions such as ‘kicking down doors.’ Some even forced open train doors and self-evacuated before emergency services intervened.
Aftermath and Consequences
Passengers faced distressing situations, with some missing flights from Heathrow, suffering injuries, and being overcharged fares due to exceeding TfL’s ‘maximum journey time’ during the ordeal. Unsettling reports of inappropriate behavior, including sexual touching, surfaced during the delays.
Statement and Departure
In her letter to Network Rail staff, Handforth expressed gratitude for their support during her tenure and highlighted the challenges faced. She acknowledged the wrenching nature of her decision to depart but emphasized its alignment with her family and the company’s best interests.
Acknowledgment and Appreciation from Network Rail CEO
Andrew Haines, chief executive of Network Rail, conveyed gratitude to Handforth for her dedication and support throughout her tenure of three and a half years.
