An expert has warned that as we approach a “new era” of global conflict, the UK’s foes are growing “relentless” in their cyberattacks.
This comes amid reports that Russian hackers stole sensitive data from many British military facilities, including the Porton Down chemical weapons facility and the HMNB Clyde nuclear submarine base on the west coast of Scotland.
Thousands of pages of data were reportedly released onto the dark web after private security business Zaun was attacked last month in a “potentially very damaging” attack by hacker group LockBit, which has known links to Russian nationals.
The corporation blamed a “sophisticated cyberattack” for the loss of data that was used to secure sites associated with the Ministry of Defense.
Prof. Kevin Curran of Ulster University’s Department of Computer Science told the PA news agency that LockBit’s attack was “serious” in light of the looming threat of “World War Three” as a result of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Given the nature of the target, he claimed the strike was “likely” backed by the Russian state, and he added that Britain’s foes have grown “relentless” in their cyberattacks.
Professor Curran cautioned that we were not ready for this new era because of the lack of regulation of third-party firms that store information on our military infrastructure.
You can’t force outside vendors to play by your rules, he warned.Having third-party suppliers always raises questions about whether or not they follow standard procedures.
Cybercrime is the most widespread kind of criminal activity, and this is cause for concern.Everything is quite serious because of the new era we are entering, which is on the precipice of World War Three.
They never let up on their assaults.
They never let up on their assaults. Our nation’s defenses against cyberattacks are its best line of defense. The country is in danger right now.Given the intended audience, I would put money on this being state funded.
Expert on matters of defense and security Edward Lucas once observed, “The problem is that we don’t live in a bubble – we bring stuff from the outside world.” There are weak spots there.
It’s like a lily pad in that it tells them where something is and what’s coming and going from here. In order to go where you’re going, you have to hop from one to the other.
Labour MP and member of the Commons Defence Select Committee Kevan Jones made the remarks after warning that the security of some of the country’s most sensitive installations could be compromised by the “vulnerability” of Zaun’s computer systems.
“Any information which gives security arrangements to potential enemies is of enormous concern,” he continued.
An official government spokesman has not responded to the public’s worries, saying only, “We do not comment on security matters.”
Zaun revealed that they had contacted the National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) and taken “all reasonable measures to mitigate any attacks on our systems” in a statement published on their website on Friday.
Network was “otherwise up to date” before the hack, which it said was caused by a “rogue Windows 7 PC” running software for one of their production equipment.
This is what was written: “At the time of the attack, we believed that our cybersecurity software had thwarted any transfer of data.”However, we can now confirm that LockBit did manage to download some data during the attack, possibly confined to the vulnerable PC but with the danger that some data on the server was read.
“It is believed that this is 10 GB of data, 0.74% of our stored data.Zaun is widely renowned as an expert in providing high-security perimeter fencing for a variety of notable locations.
Facilities like jails, military outposts, and power plants all make use of our wares.
Zaun has been reached out to for clarification.
