The Metropolitan Police (Met) has released an image of a man they are seeking to question in relation to the vandalism of ULEZ (Ultra Low Emission Zone) cameras in west London.
This move comes as it has been disclosed that a total of 288 incidents involving ULEZ camera vandalism have been reported across the capital.
In anticipation of the launch of the ULEZ on August 29, there have been numerous instances of vandalism against cameras, with some cameras even being torn down.
The ULEZ initiative, championed by London Mayor Sadiq Khan, gained court approval to impose a daily charge of £12.50 on motorists with non-compliant vehicles within the North and South Circular roads.
However, these charges have faced opposition from certain councils and motorists.
As part of their ongoing efforts, detectives have shared an image of an individual they are attempting to locate in connection with four offenses that occurred on Saturday, 17 June, in Hillingdon, Harrow, and Uxbridge.
Investigation into ULEZ Camera Vandalism Continues
The Metropolitan Police continues to diligently investigate a series of ULEZ camera vandalism incidents that have occurred across London.
The investigation was initiated in April following reports of criminal damage and theft conveyed to the Met by Transport for London (TfL).
As of Tuesday, 1 August, the Met has documented a total of 288 crimes linked to ULEZ cameras.
These incidents include approximately 185 reports of cable damage, 164 instances of camera theft, and 38 reports of camera obstruction.
It’s worth noting that a single crime can encompass multiple offenses.
For example, an offense might involve both damaging a cable and subsequently stealing the camera.
Collaborative Efforts to Address ULEZ Camera Targeting
Officers are collaborating closely with Transport for London to proactively address the targeting of ULEZ cameras across London.
Commander Owain Richards emphasized the seriousness of these criminal acts, indicating that a dedicated team of officers is actively investigating and identifying those responsible.
He further stated, “Our approach to policing is measured, considering the range of operational demands and crimes we are obligated to address throughout London.
We’re working hand-in-hand with Transport for London, and alongside our ongoing investigation into previously committed offenses, we are also aiding them in identifying innovative methods to prevent further instances of camera damage or theft.”
Richards assured the public that the police force is continually reassessing their focus to ensure an effective response.
He pledged to uphold the level of service that Londoners expect from law enforcement.
